+++++UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE! +++++

  • As of early 2024, Dom’s Subs are back in The City, this time at 7 Cullum St, EC3M 7JJ (click the link to open Google Maps; the Street View has not been updated yet), which is off Fenchurch Street. You can read the news on this Instagram post of theirs.
  • (Update as of December 2023) Dom’s Subs is no longer located in Bevis Marks! They’re currently residing at 8 Ludgate Circus (click the link to open Google Maps; the Street View still has not been updated), pretty much on the other side of the city, near(ish) St Paul’s. It’s on the corner of Fleet Street and Farringdon Street, behind the red phone box; there’s an M&S Food on the other side.
  • The nearest public transport is now City Thameslink. It’s a smaller menu for now, just the bestsellers, according to their Instagram.
  • In other menu news, the Spicy D had been made even spicier, apparently.

+++++UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE! +++++

You’ll find below what I wrote in an earlier version of the post. I’m keeping it in for reference, including the photos, for now.

Dom’s Subs is a sandwich shop on the edge of The City, a stone throw from the Gherkin. There’s another location in Hackney, which is actually the original one, but the one I visited is the City outpost, which opened a short time after the Hackney one.

Doms Subs: the space

It’s a tiny space, but they’ve managed to wedge in a couple of tables and chairs, and there’s also a couple of tables outside. In busy times, grabbing a space is somewhat hit-and-miss, but visit shortly before closing time and seating is no problem.

Doms Subs: the menu

The menu is compact: 7 sandwiches made to order, including 1 vegan option, as well as a limited time offer special. Portion sizes are huge, and the sandwiches are handed to you tightly wrapped in foil, and a good thing that is, because otherwise, half the filling would end up on the floor. Best to find a flat surface on which to unwrap…

The fillings are epic. No, really. The Thai inspired Grapow for example has “spicy Thai ground chicken, gem lettuce, kewpie mayo, pickled cucumbers and carrots, Thai basil, coriander, pickled red chillies, crispy shallots and fragrant toasted rice powder.” (It’s very spicy, apparently. )

Doms Subs: The Vegan Dom tried and tested

There’s only one vegan offering, but it’s magnificent. The Vegan Dom 2.0” has “roasted aubergine marinated in chilli, ginger and garlic, salad of green beans, bean sprouts, fresh mint, Thai basil, coriander, salted black beans with a spicy prik tum vinegar dressing, vegan mayonnaise, topped with sticky roasted cashews”

I’ve tried it, and lemme tell you…. those sticky roasted cashews? Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm. (The rest of the sandwich was awesome too, of course.)

Oh, and let’s talk about the bread for a minute. The semolina rolls are baked in house, and they’re the most perfect foil to the fillings (did I mention the fillings are fantastic? Oh, I did. Never mind, it bears repeating.) The rolls are soft and chewy on the inside, crispy and chewy on the outside, and all in all perfect. (I don’t suppose they’d share the recipe if we asked nicely….?)

Prices are pretty reasonable for what you’re getting (an average of £10), and there are drinks (cans) available too.

Oh, and the décor is way cool, too.
