Kerb at Cowcross Yards

Cowcross Yards is a small courtyard wedged between a hodgepodge of office buildings and casual restaurants, about three minutes’ walk from Farringdon station. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Cowcross Yards hosts a small food market organized by street food market brand KERB.

Here an ever changing line-up of street food merchants offers a choice of dishes from a whole range of cuisines, every plate more tantalizing than the others.

There are a few wooden tables and benches you can take your food to, as well as some street benches under a tree – handy if you don’t want to eat in the office, or if you don’t have an office to go back to.

Utopia at Kerb

On the Utopia menu: three wraps, three sides, and boxes, which are wraps with some sides. And a dessert, which I didn’t try, but I wish I had (layered halva crêpe….mmmmm…. )

I had the maqali wrap (the one with the roasted vegetables filling), in the box version – lots of food!

The fries were golden and very crunchy, and also delicious. They probably would have been even more delicious if they had been served hot…. I mean, who’s ever heard of room temperature fries? But, oh, so deliciously crunchy!

The wrap was very nice, though I couldn’t really taste the tahini sauce that was supposed to flavour it. I found that unwrapping the flatbread and eating the filling on its own really made the flavours of the roasted vegetables come alive.

The salad came with flatbread croutons. Like the fries, those were golden and crunchy and very delicious, as was the rest of the salad. It was full of nice chunks of tomato and cucumber, and even chunks of a crisp apple – unexpected but delicious.

The third side was baba ganoush. Mmmm, baba ganoush. Never not nice. Unless that was meant to be the tahini sauce? But no pickles anywhere that I could see. Having said that, those are niggles, really. All in all, Utopia at Kerb was a very enjoyable meal.

Handy tip: Cowcross Yards has several entrances, there’s a surprising number of little alleyways that make that block a bit of a mini labyrinth. The easiest way is to enter via Cowcross Street.

If you’re arriving by rail into Farrington Station, turn right on leaving the station. If you’re arriving into Farrington tube station, turn left on leaving the station.

Walk towards the pub called The Castle, then walk up the street that’s on the right hand side (Cowcross Street). Keep to the left hand side of the road, and go through the covered passageway between Leon’s and Starbucks. (There’s a sign that says “Cowcross Yards”.)
