Homemade Mediterranean and plenty of pancakes: Nakos Café, Kingston’s hidden spot

Nakos is a friendly family run café/ restaurant in Kingston upon Thames, tucked away in a small side street next by Kingston Apple Market. The space is tastefully decorated, and the plastic chairs give it a slight vintage vibe (and are very comfortable).

Nakos: the menu

Nakos have a small selection of Italian products (lots of pasta) for sale at the back, but the menu casts a wider net. It’s centred around freshly homemade Mediterranean food, and is full of inventive flavours and interesting dishes. It’s split more or less equally between savoury dishes and sweet ones, and there are plenty of options.

The breakfasts are served all day. Lots of choice if you want eggs: so many omelettes. Even more choice if you want pancakes or crêpes. On the sweet side, the crêpes have fillings of Nutella, Nutella with biscuits, Nutella with bananas, Nutella with strawberry, Nutella with strawberry and banana… well, you get the idea…(Did I mention Nutella with Oreos?). And they also offer American style pancakes in one savoury version and several sweet ones. The savoury side is more modest, with “only” 5 crêpes to choose from (including a vegetarian option).

The rest of the dishes draw their inspiration from either Greece or Italy. The salad and pies take more from the Greek side. The pasta dishes are strong on seafood, but there’s also a wild boar ravioli, and many family favourites like lasagne.

To go with all that, you’ll find various fruit juices and fruit juices blends, cold drinks, a couple of desserts. Plus coffee for all tastes, naturally.

And Nakos prices are reasonable, and the portion sizes are pretty large – such a find!

Personal impressions of Nakos

I had the American pancakes, and they were very nice. They would have been even better with some butter on the side, but you can’t have everything. The bacon was crisp and perfectly crunchy; the pancakes were soft and pillowy, as American pancakes ought to be. The coffee came in a large warmed up cup with milk on the side.

It was quite empty when I first sat down, but started filling up soon enough. There are plenty of tables, though, so the space didn’t feel crowded.

Enjoyable soundtrack of soul classics in the background, too. It’s always nice to hear Sade on the radio.

All in all, a lovely spot for breakfast in Kingston upon Thames. Psst… If you’re looking for a lunch spot, I recommend Comptoir Libanais.

And if it’s shopping for bargains you’re looking for, do have a rummage in Kingston’s charity shops.
