Rosslyn Coffee London Wall

Rosslyn Coffee was established in 2018 and has won a lot of praise and recognition since then. They have separate roasting processes for black coffee, milk coffee, and even filter coffee – how’s that for coffee love? No wonder Condé Nast traveller has crowned them the best coffee shop in the whole of the City of London.

Rosslyn Coffee has 6 locations in The City; the London Wall one is a busy spot on one of London’s most iconic streets, a stone’s throw from Moorgate or Liverpool Street Station. The windows are floor to ceiling, the decor Scandi-chic, and the place feels flooded with light even on the greyest days. It’s standing room only, though you’ll find plenty of benches just outside, some belonging to the café, some not. And they open from 6:30 in the morning, perfect for early risers.

Forbes and Hamilton Coffee House

Another wonderful coffee shop very close to Liverpool Street station and Moorgate is Forbes & Hamilton Coffee House. If you love your coffee shops with atmosphere as well as good coffee (and delicious pastries both sweet and savoury), you’re going to love this one. Forbes & Hamilton feels like a very special place, a cozy nook to retreat to when the day gets too much.

It’s a wood-panelled haven with vintage photos of actors and comedians on the walls, and furniture entirely made of church pews. There’s a relaxed, intimate feel to the space, and the mood is more like a local neighbourhood spot beloved by regulars than a coffee shop on a busy street. Bonus: they even have a couple of tables outside, so in the summer, if you’re lucky enough to grab one of them, you can enjoy an al fresco rest and refuel.

Forbes & Hamilton feels like it’s been around forever, a throwback to the kind of coffee houses the City of London was built on.

88 Beans

88 Beans coffee shop is technically not on London Wall. It’s on the ground floor of 88 Wood Street, (and that’s where the entrance is), but the café (and its terrace) faces London Wall, and that’s close enough to count.

This is one for lovers of architecture: 88 Wood Street, the building, is a 2000 RIBA award winner by Richard Rogers, who also designed the perhaps better known Lloyds Building at 1 Lime street, on the other side of The City. Don’t know that one? Maybe you know the Pompidou Centre in Paris? That was Richard Rogers, too. And if that wasn’t enough, it sits in the shadow of Albion Gate (also known as 125 London Wall), a most impressive example of post-modernist architecture.

Like Forbes & Hamilton, it feels like a very special place, although the mood could not be more different: it’s a light airy space, and its industrial-lite vibe is softened with lots of green plants and comfortable mid-century style chairs. But like Forbes & Hamilton, it feels like a place only locals would know: there’s no website or Google Maps listing I could find, and you’d only know it’s there if you walk past (or work in the building).
