Mary’s Living and Giving, charity shop with a difference, Bermondsey

Bermondsey Street is one of the coolest streets in London (take my word for it 😎), and it’s made even cooler by the presence of a great charity shop: Mary’s Living and Giving Shop for Save the Children. Yeah, that name really rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it…

What’s behind the name is a series of stores orchestrated by retail expert Mary Portas for the Save the Children charity. The first “Living & Giving Shop” opened in 2009, and there are now over 20 of them in London, plus a few scattered around the country. They aim to be “charity shops with a difference”, and often stock high end and designer offerings.

In Bermondsey, the cheerful yellow door sets the scene, and the interior space is nicely uncluttered. The grey and yellow décor is fresh and inviting. The clothes in the rails hang from nice wooden hangers – no cheap plastic here! The space is mostly devoted to women’s clothes and shoes, but there’s a small men’s section too, as well as accessories, plus some vintage knick-knacks at the back.

When I visited, you could also grab some Save the Children branded bee-themed goodies like tea towels, spice blends or bamboo socks.

It’s not a huge space, so you could easily pop in on your lunch break, if you work in the area, or even a bit further afield, and go through the rails with enough time left for lunch (maybe at Smashing Plates nearby). And who knows what bargains you might spot?

If you’d like to hunt even more bargains, have a look at this guide to the best charity shops in Pimlico, the best charity shops in Kingston upon Thames, and the best charity shops in Battersea (that one comes with bonus pizza, what more can I say…). And if that’s not enough, you can visit the Shop from Crisis store in Elephant & Castle and the one in Archway. Oh, and there are a few charity shops in Herne Hill and Croydon, too. Happy thrifting!
