For this year’s Christmas Windows on the blog, it’s all about the Christmas windows at Selfridges! They are nothing short of magnificent, and if you get the chance to go see them in person, I highly recommend it.

This year, Selfridges have given over their Christmas windows to Andrew Logan. Don’t know who Andrew Logan is? Well, here you go.

Andrew Logan is a sculptor, stage designer, jewellery designer, portraitist and performance artist, active since the late sixties. There’s a one man museum dedicated to his work in Wales, and he also owns a hotel close to the museum. It’s called the Lion Art Hotel and Restaurant, and offers a fully immersive experience into Andrew Logan’s art. (Having said that, the website seems to have expired, and Google Maps shows the hotel as temporarily closed.)

He’s the founder of the Alternative Miss World, an art and fashion event that was devised as a cross between the Crufts dog show and a beauty pageant. Time Out calls it a “psychosexual cabaret dreamscape” (and who am I to disagree!) and it first took place in 1972. Notable participants have included Derek Jarman and Leigh Bowery. The last one was in 2018, so who knows when the next one will be, but in the meantime, but you can buy plenty of souvenirs from previous events.

Andrew Logan’s sculptures are big, bold and colourful, and his jewellery positively embodies the expression “statement pieces”: whether earrings, brooches and necklace, they are dazzling, often oversized, and incorporate unexpected materials.

There’s a gift shop too, in case none of the places mentioned in my post on Christmas shopping in London appeal.

So, really, no wonder the Selfridges 2024 Christmas Windows are so jaw-dropping… But see for yourself…
