Tupi: what is it like?
Tupi is a casual restaurant with three locations south of the river: Croydon, Peckham and Elephant and Castle. It’s the one in Elephant and Castle I visited, and I’m definitely going to go back and try some of the other things on the menu.
There’s a Mexican/ South American flair to the dishes, and they have a smattering of vegetarian/ vegan/ gluten-free/ dairy free offerings. Tupi are pretty strong on breakfast and brunches and, indeed, they are not open in the evenings.
The décor is a mix of bold graphics, warm woods, and vibrant colours, very pleasing to the eye. At the Elephant & Castle location, there’s an outdoor terrace where you can enjoy the sun, and the large windows make the inside bright and airy.
I had the vegetarian fry up and it was yummy. Lots of avocado (mmmmm… avocado!), lovely bread, and the chimichurri was wonderful. I wish they’d include it as a side on the menu, I’d order an extra portion if they did (several extra portions, even…). It seems to go with everything! Also, I’m not usually a fan of mushrooms, but the ones on my plate were actually very moreish. Portion size was just right, too.
The mint tea I had as a drink came in a teapot that was both pretty and practical, so the tea was kept nicely warm until I finished my plate.
On top of that, service was cheerful and very friendly and prices are pretty reasonable (most dishes are between £10 and £15).
Brunch in Elephant and Castle? Sorted! And quite handy if you’re visiting G. Baldwin & Co…
