10 things to do in London in February (2023)

London in February: it’s grey and dismal, the days are still short, and it’s bloody cold. The glimmer of excitement from the January sales is a long-gone memory. It’s a good thing it’s the shortest month of the year.

Having said that, London being London, there are still plenty of things to do. So here’s a hand-picked list of things to do in London in February. Not a complete list by any means, deliberately so, just some of the most interesting of all the things to do in London in February 2022.

Feb 1st: Celebrate 75 years of the ICA

“Seven artists experiment with hybrid modes of presentation across music, performance and moving image. The night features emotion driven and sensory live sets at the forefront of experimental music”. So…a party, ICA style.

When: Thursday Wed, 01 Feb 2023, start at 8pm

Feb 2nd to Feb 23: “London in Documentaries”, a course at the Bishopsgate Institute

A 4 weeks course for anyone with an interest in the history of London, “London in Documentaries” will “explore how the capital has been portrayed in documentary films.”

When: Thursday 2 – Thursday 23 February, 18:30 – 20:30

9 Feb: National Pizza Day

You know what to do, right?

Until 12th Feb: In Plain Sight, at the Wellcome collection

An exhibition that “explores the different ways we see and are seen by others” – now that sounds intriguing…

When: until 12th Feb

Where: Wellcome Collection, 183 Euston Rd, NW1 2BE

Cost: Free.

Nearest transport: Euston Square(Circle Line, Hammersmith and City Line, Metropolitan Line), Warren Street (Northern Line, Victoria Line) or Euston (Northern Line, Victoria Line, British Rail)

Explore the world of Street Art in this exhibition featuring over 100 artists, icons, rule-breakers and mark-makers.

When: 17 February – 9 May 2023

Where: Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York’s HQ, King’s Rd, SW3 4RY

Cost: Tickets from £15.

Nearest transport: Sloane Square (Central Line, District Line)

You’ve got until the 19th of February to catch Turner on Tour, at the National Gallery. “For the first time in a century, two ground-breaking paintings by Turner are coming home for a special exhibition.”

When: until 19th Feb

Where: National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, WC2N 5DN

Cost: Free, but booking in advance is advised.

Nearest transport: Aldgate East (District Line, Hammersmith and City Line) or Aldgate (Circle line, Metropolitan Line) Charing Cross (Bakerloo Line, Northern Line), Leicester Square (Northern Line, Piccadilly Line)

On Friday 17th , there’s a talk to go with the paintings: “Turner and value”. Room 36, 7 – 7.45 pm, free admission, but need a (free) Gallery ticket.

Also at the National gallery, there’s an online courses that runs for 4 Mondays in February: Practising Italian through paintings. It is recommended that participants have an intermediate knowledge of Italian.

When: every Monday in Feb, so 6-13-20-27 Feb, 4.30 – 6 pm, although sessions can also be watched after the class in your own time.

Where: online through Zoom.

Cost: standard tickets are £50 (£47 for full-time students, jobseekers, and disabled adults)

23rd Feb: Bernie Sanders talk at the Southbank Centre

At the Southbank Centre, there’s a talk by Bernie Sanders: “It’s OK To Be Angry About Capitalism”. You can buy the “It’s OK To Be Angry About Capitalism” book for a reduced price at the same time as the ticket and pick it up on the evening of the talk.

When: Feb 23rd at 8pm.

Where: Royal Festival Hall, Belvedere Rd, SE1 8XX

Cost: Standard tickets cost from £15 ⁠–⁠ £52, plus a £3.50 booking fee.

Approximate run time: 1 hour 30 mins.

Featuring 85 talks on 85 books, from autobiographies to Translation. There are some free talks, and some online ones. You can have a look at the online version of the program here.

The Whitechapel Gallery, in Aldgate, has a an intringuingly named exhibition by London-based Korean-Canadian artist, Zadie Xa: House Gods, Animal Guides and Five Ways 2 Forgiveness

When: until the 30th April

The Whitechapel gallery is closed on Mondays, open from 11 – 18 the rest of the week.

Cost: Free.

Alongside the exhibition, on Feb 16, there’s a discussion titled The Korean House, that aims to “explore the spiritual realm of the home in historic and contemporary Korean culture.” Starts at 7pm, tickets from £5.
