London in March: a bit more sun; still cold. The clocks go back on the 26th of March, so we get one more hour of daylight at the end of the day…and one less in the mornings. OK, enough of the monthly weather report, and onwards with a hand-picked list of interesting things to do in London this coming March.

Until March 5: Battersea Power station Light Festival 2023

What: the last few days for the Light Festival 2023, 8 artworks of a luminous nature

Every Sunday in March: free guided history tour of Morden hall Park

What: an exhibition exploring the 1970s art and activism of the collective organisation Artists For Democracy

How to get there: Euston (Northern line, Victoria line, Overground, National Rail), Goodge Street (Northern line) and Holborn (Central line, Piccadilly line)

March 15 to April 8: Debate: Baldwin VS Buckley at Stone Nest

What: Debate: Baldwin VS Buckley. Not the actual debate of course (that took place in 1965), but a play and a series of post-show talks.

From March 18 to April 2: Telegraph Hill festival

What: a not-for-profit festival to celebrate the local community in and around Telegraph Hill, South East London. It gathers makers, artists, community groups and features an eclectic mix of events for a wide audience. There are walks, talks, live music artists open studios, well-being workshops, a craft market, comedy, and even a dog show! The event page is excellent and allows you to filter event type according to your interests. There seems to be a LOT going on! From Sainsbury to Goldsmith University, the venues are equally varied.

When: Mar 18 to April 2

Where: various venues around Telegraph Hill

How much does it cost: it varies by event, but it ranges from free to inexpensive.

How to get there: it depends on the venue, but the main public transport stops are Brockley, New Cross, New Cross Gate, Nunhead BR, St John’s BR; so mostly the Overground and commuter trains.

From March 24 to March 26: Finnish Easter Fair 2023 at the Finnish Church

What: the 2023 Finnish Easter Fair, featuring traditional Finnish Easter treats and gift items.

When: March 24 to Mar 26

Where: at the Finnish Church in Rotherhithe.

Address: 33 Albion St, SE16 7HZ.

How much does it cost: not specified, but the Christmas fair was a voluntary £1 donation (and both cash and cards were accepted)

How to get there: the nearest tube stations are Rotherhithe (Overground) or Canada water (Overground, Jubilee line). From Rotherhithe, cross the road at the traffic lights to the left, walk to the side of the Nisa supermarket (Old railway Walk) and then turn right.

Anything else? The opening hours are Friday 12:00-20:00 | Saturday 12:00-18:00 | Sunday 12:00-17:00

Until March 29: magnificent maps of London at the London Metropolitan Archives

What: Dozens and dozens of maps charting the development of London from the 16th century though the present times. It includes the Agas map, which is the oldest complete map of London, and much more besides. A fascinating glimpse into London’s history.

Where: at London Metropolitan Archives in Clerkenwell

How much does it cost: free

How to get there: the nearest station is Farringdon (Circle line, Hammersmith & City line, Metropolitan line, Elizabeth Line)

Anything else? Opening hours are Monday to Thursday, 10am to 4pm (open late on Wednesdays until 7pm). Also open on the 11th March 10am to 4pm

March 25: Simone, le voyage du siècle Ciné Lumière:

What: A showing of the movie “Simone, le voyage du siècle”, about Simone Veil, an extraordinary woman and one of France most revered public figures.

When: Sat 25 Mar at 5.40pm and also Sun 02 Apr at 6.30pm

Where: at Ciné Lumière, the cinema attached to the Institut Francais in Kensington

How much does it cost: £15 at most

How to get there: the nearest tube station is South Kensington (Circle line, District line, Piccadilly line)

Until Spring: Sculpture in the City (all over the City of London)

What: a sculpture trail of 19 artworks on display all over the City of London.

When: until Spring 2023. If that’s the beginning of Spring, that’s 20th of March, so I’m putting in in this month guide. If it’s the end of Spring, it’s until June 21.

Where: The City of London

How much does it cost: it’s free

How to get there: the most central tube station for The City is Bank (Central line, Northern line, Waterloo & City line, DLR)

Saturdays all this month: Open City walks

What: Over 20 themed walks all over London organized by Open City, the parent company of the Open House festival. Most are on Saturdays, and here are some examples of what’s on offer:

  • Golden Lane and Barbican Architecture Walking Tour
  • Architecture of Westminster Cultural Landmarks walking tour
